This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use the search engine Google. I am going to use this search engine because I like the way it is set up, and I love ow they have a picture/video of the day based on what day it is. I think the correct answer is C because I know that Tortola (which is in the British Virgin Islands) is far more south than the Bermuda Triangle (so it can’t be B) and the Bahamas are inside of the triangle ( so it wouldn’t be A ). I am going to use the key words Bermuda, triangle, and location. I typed the key words into the search box but the words jumped  up into a different box. Then I scrolled through the snippets and decided to look at the worldatlas.com page. On that page I found the correct answer. http://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/bermudat.htm the correct answer in  C: Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico.

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I am going to use the Duck Duck Go search engine. I am going to use this search engine because I have never used it before and I want I try it out. Also the duck is adorable. I think the correct answer is B…. because Pernambuco seems like the name of someplace in Spain. I am going to use the keywords Recife, Pernambuco, and capital. As soon as I typed these words in, other terms popped up automatically. It predicted what I was searching for. I scrolled through the snippets and decided to look at the brazil.org page. On that page ( http://www.brazil.org.za/recife.html ) I found the correct answer. The correct answer was C: Brazil.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I will use another kind of search engine, this time, I will use Bing. I am going to try this one because I haven’t used it yet and I have to. I think the correct answer is B because 1,300 is a long time ago, but not so long ago that Nara didn’t exist. I am going to search the keywords Nara, Japan, 2010, capital city, and anniversary. As soon as I typed Nara Japan, Nara Japan anniversary 2010 popped up. After looking through the snippets, I decided to look at nytimes.com. I chose this page because the answer was in the title. On that page (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/travel/03headsup.html?_r=0) I found the answer- B: 1,300 years

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

I will use another (different) search engine-this time I will use ixquick.com. I have not used this one before and Mr. Woolner said it was a good one to use. Ixquick does not track your searches. I really don’t know what the answer is. Keywords that I’m going to search are Northern Pacific Gyre and contain. Ixquick did not bring up suggestions. But once I typed in my key words, I found a site (http://scribol.com/environment/waste-and-recycling/the-north-pacific-gyre-100-million-tons-of-garbage-and-growing) with the answer in its title. The correct answer is B: A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle.

We are going to do this question in a very, very, very, very different way. We are going to compare some search engines. I am going to use Duck Duck Go, Google, Bing, and Ixquick. I am going to guess the correct answer is A, but I really don’t have a reason for this guess. I am going to use the keywords Hagia Sophia. On Google, the first website that came up was a Wikipedia site. Duck Duck Go brought up a Wikipedia site, too. Ixquick gave me travel sites like Expedia. Bing brought up a Wikipedia page first, too. I found the answer on a few different pages. I used the website http://www.hagiasophia.com/ . The correct answer is A: Istanbul, Turkey. It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.

    1. Lili’uokalani
    2. Kauai
    3. Lanai

I am going to use the search engine Bing when I look for the answer to this question. I thin k that the correct answer to this question is C. This is a random guess I really have no idea. The keywords that I’m going to search with are Hawaii, smallest, and island. I am going to limit the snippets with :.com. After scrolling through the snippets, I chose to look at http://traveltips.usatoday.com/smaller-islands-hawaii-33098.html

There are actually many more islands, so it was hard to find the answer. Eventually I found that the correct answer (just like I thought) was C: Lanai.
