Place (describe Mt Cardigan)
physical geography of Cardigan
Mount Cardigan is a rocky bald headed peak that has a saddle that is called the Mowglis trail that connects it to Firescrew mountain. The drawing I chose was drawn by Bailey Brook which is a stream that runs between Cardigan and the lodge. Here are the coordinates for Bailey Brook, Latitude,43 Degrees, 38 min and 54.9 seconds. The Longitude is , W 71 degrees, 52 minutes and 52.2 seconds. When we did a stream study I learned what a stream habitats was like in this area vs. the Amazon jungle. For example, the stones in the stream where round and the water was clear. There was a drought this summer causing the stream to have low water level. We also learned about (Ph) the acidity of the water during our stream study. Another thing we learned that there was evidence of erosion from spring rain. There are many deciduous beech trees around the Bailey Brook area. There are also many coniferous spruce trees around the area as well. Because of the thick canopy of the forest there was few little plants or shrubs growing near the stream.
Cultural Geography (how is it special, how is it different)
The Cardigan area, along with a lot of the New England region, was wrecked by paper and wood companies that would cut down the trees on the top of the mountains and valleys in order to be able to sell wood and make paper. A conservationist found a legal way to protect the forest. There was no protection for the trees but there was protection for the rivers and waterways that flowed through the states. In order to protect the rivers the conservationist convinced the government that the forest needed to be protected too.Cardigan Mountain was known also for its agriculture then and now. For example the AMC lode was a old barn back then and today it is basically a hotel that people pay to stay in and go hiking the next day.Today, you can still see some of the visible barn beams. There are still apple orchards located in the Cardigan area. Firescrew mountain is different from Cardigan because Cardigan has a higher elevation. Firescrew is a bald peak because there was a fire on the top in the 1990’s. I am very thankful that that the thick forests for everyone to enjoy and for the animals to be able to live in a safe woods.
We were there for three days, sunday , Monday, Tuesday.
