Concord Monitor Quiz 15-16 (perhaps for the last time EVER)

A Project About “Searching” for the Correct Information.

First Name  L.I_______Charles R.________

Date______________March 14-____________

 Color Group____Red_____

This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

DuckDuckGo was used to answer this. I used this search engine because I like how it works and that I can browse images and search answers simultaneously.

I believe that the answer is A, because my gut tells me to do it. I used the query “Bermuda Triangle Point”. It was able to predict what I searched. After searching, it turns out that the correct answer was C. After seeing this I realized that I had stated that the Bermuda triangle spanned over some of Mexico and some of South America. As it turns out, the answer was actually C.

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I used the search engine Bing, because I like the search layout

Before searching, I made my guess on C, Brazil, because of the story of the Pernambuco wood as told by Mr. Woolner. I knew that the capital of Italy was Rome. Pernambuco is also a tropical wood, so it almost had to be Brazil. After the search, it turns out it was, in fact, right.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I will use the search engine Ixquick.com. I am using this because Mr. Woolner said too. I will search up “Nara, japan first capital”

Before searching, I know that Feudal Japan occurred from 1B.C. to 1000 A.C.E., so that rules out c. I searched those, and found that I was right. There were no searching suggestions, which was interesting. I selected the japan guide website about the 1300th anniversary. Nara was the capital in 710, and 2000-710=1300. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e4116.html

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

And for the 4th question, we will use yet another search engine. www.webcrawler.com. I am going to use it because Mr. W. is. I will use the search terms North Pacific Gyre. I believe that it will be B., because I have heard about a huge island of trash. I searched it, and it came up with lots of ads. I wonder why…

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

We going to do this very very very different this time. We will use 4 different search engine. I will try Bing, DuckDuckGo, www.startpage.com, and Dogpile. I will use the search terms Hagia Sophia. I believe that the answer is a, because Piya said so. When I searched with www.startpage.com, no autofills appeared, but with the other three, they did show with autofills, although they did not use the omnibox. The two major search engines, Bing and DuckDuckGo, did not need ads. Huh. Dogpile and www.startpage.com showed up with ads. I guessed correctly, as it was a.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

    1. Wheeling, West Virginia.
    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

For this, we will do an advanced search with this. I will use google.

I believe that it is b. I used an advanced search by typing in a colon, asterisk, and then a .edu.

As It turns out, I was right. But this time, instead of predicting my answer, it didn’t show results. Interesting, but kind of predictable, seeing as I used a site colon. I had to try a few different websites, as I didn’t find what I was looking for immediately. I entered some archive websites, but they didn’t provide any information.

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

    1. In dairy country east of London
    2. Southwest England
    3. Near the Scottish border

.com

I will be using the search engine Bing, and use an advanced search for edu.

As it turns out, when I did the specific search, it didn’t work. Hmmph. Next, I tried removing the dot, but that didn’t work either. I then tried removing the asterisk, and wa-la. It worked, and I was able to find the result I was looking for. I tried one that looked a it promising, as I saw England. Sadly, it was just a website with food reviews. I tried again, finding another, and this one gave the location of where the scones and clotted cream were created. I was right, southwestern England.

  1. What and where are the Adirondacks?

    1. The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs
    2. Mountain range in New York state
    3. American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

.net

For this, I used Bing again, and did the same advanced search except this time for a .net. Lucky me when I found the official website of the Adirondacks, right off the bat! I scrolled through the website, but was unable to find what I was looking for. I went through the tabs, until I found the map tab that told me where it was located. I was right, it was in upstate New York.

  1. Most people just call the region the Caribbean, but what is its formal name?

    1. The West Indies
    2. The East Indies
    3. The South Indies

For this, I will use DuckDuckGo, and I will do an advanced search for a .gov site.

As I started the search, it took me to the omnibox, and immediately results started popping up, even one for a cruise! I selected the first clipping, one from the site ‘The White House’, but it did not tell me what I was looking for, only about drug trafficking, and other crimes going on there. I tried many times, fiddling with my query, but was unable to find anything. I even tried ‘Caribbean other name’, and it still didn’t give me an answer. Since I was unable to find the answer, I decided to stop the advanced search, and use the answer in the query, instead looking up ‘Caribbean ocean region west indies’ and I skipped over the cruise, tourism, and food websites in order to find a seagrass one, and I found my answer. I was right, the answer was A.

  1. Almost all tourists who visit the Galapagos Islands leave for their trip from what city?

    1. Quito, Ecuador
    2. Santiago, Chile
    3. La Paz, Bolivia

.edu

For this, I will use a google advanced search for a .edu website. Of course. Google took me to the omnibox, coming up with Galapagos before I had typed in ‘galap’. I’m going to select my first clipping, a Galapagos travel from The Alumni Program. I lucked out, seeing to have the answer on the first clipping, although I was actually wrong with my answer. It was, in fact, one that is not listed, but it was in Ecuador. I assumed that this was an alternate name for A, Quito, and called that the right answer. http://alumni.virginia.edu/travel/trips/2015/galapagos-islands/
