Day 3: A Day in the Rain

From Cardigan to Hopkinton

On the third day we woke up and packed. Once we were all dressed and packed, we headed down stairs where we drank hot coco and socialized. When breakfast was ready we sat down and ate. The breakfast consisted of french toast, watermelon, bacon, and a few other sides. We all tried hard to put as much food into us as we could because we this was our last chance for lowering our ORT record. Once we heard the ORT report we were all surprised to find that we only had 0.4 lbs of food waste. Even after getting ready before breakfast we still needed to get into our hiking boots and add the final touches on our packs. We also had to pack and dress for rain because the clouds were low hanging and it looked like it would begin to rain at any second.

Everything was wet. It had clearly continued to rain throughout the night. My group all sat down at a picnic table that was brown with water. We did an activity where we saw how many drops of water we could place on a penny with a dropper. Most people guessed that it would be around 5-10 but Teagan E. managed to get at least 100 tiny drops on hers. After we had spent a few minutes on this we assigned jobs and went on a hike/walk. We walked down to a stream where we began to do a stream study. There was a bridge and a slowly moving river beneath it. In the river there was quite a few rocks. The water was very clear. After checking the level of oxygen we found out that this was because there was oxygen in it.

We had to sketch what we saw before we could explore with the nets. I did a quick sketch of the bridge, the clearing next to it (with logs and stumps for benches), and the stream. My sketch also included the cairn we built. We also named the cairn. It's official name was Susan Trump Stump. There was a lot back to the naming of the cairn based off of silly mistakes and silly thoughts. Ronald F. , Piya B. and I all went exploring down stream. We were able to find another stream that was coming off of the current stream. Our new stream was dry. We all had to regroup and do an activity. This activity was to order some cards in order of what we thought was the most acidic to the least acidic. As we did this, it began to rain. Soon it was down pouring. Our group was aloud to check out the area for just a while longer. As we went back down the river, the steam that we had seen had begun to flow because it was filling up. Everything got pretty wet. So after a little bit of exploring following the river we turned back and decided to go back to the lodge.

Once we were in the lodge, my group decided to play cards and eat snacks. Because of the rain, our instructor thought that we could stay inside. The rain keeping us in is an example of human environment interaction. We changed what we (human) were going to do around what the rain (environment) was doing. While everyone else was outside, we caught up on sketching and then talked a little bit about what we had just done. Then we played a game of spoons while we ate our sandwiches that were our lunch.

As soon as everyone got back we got ready to leave. We began to do a few last minute things. We waited around for a while. This time we were with the entire session one. Only a few minutes after beginning to wait, the bus pulled up and we loaded on. The bus ride was rocky. It felt just as long as it did the way there. Only thing was different. Our destination was Hopkinton NH.

We were at Cardigan for three days. Sunday (Day 1) was a nice sunny day. Monday (Day 2) was humid and it rained in the afternoon. On Tuesday (Day 3) had a very very very rainny day.

This is a picture of the bridge where we did our stream study that day. A was shown in the sketch (sort of), there was a bridge, a cairn, a shallow stream, a log bench, and the forest surrounding all of that.
This is a quick drawing of the cairn we made at the stream. In the sketch, I spelled the name wrong by adding a t at the end of Trump (As in Donald Trump).
This is a sketch of the water skimmer that my group found at our stream study
This is a sketch of a frog that we found at stream study
This is the mandatory postcard that we actually had to do at Cardigan
