This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper. Answers are there, too. You need to read the question, and if you KNOW the correct answer, that is good, but you must still VERIFY that correct answer. And write out your source for that correct answer. And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to. Can you eliminate any of the answers? How? And how did you search for the correct answer? Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?
Write it out! Be complete. A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here.

1. What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?
I am going to use the search engine google. I am going to use this search engine because I use it all the time and like to use it often. I think that the answer is C because I just guessed randomly because I do not know. I am going to use the key words Bermuda Triangle and location. I noticed that as I typed the search engine started guessing what my key words were going to be and the answers started popping up even before I finished typing. I looked at all of the snippets and used the website that was “.gov” so I knew that it was reliable. http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/bermudatri.html. This website had the right answer which was C, Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico. I was right! J
I am going to use the search engine Bing. I am going to use this search engine because I have never used it before and I am going to try it out. I think that the answer is Brazil because again, I am just guessing and it kind of makes sense. I am going to use the key words Pernambuco state location. I noticed that as I typed the search engine started guessing what my key words were going to be and the answers started popping up even before I finished typing just like what happened before. I chose a “.com” site because it looked like it would tell me exactly what I was looking for. http://www.britannica.com/place/Pernambuco. This website had the right answer which was C, Brazil. I was right! J
I am going to use a different search engine this time. This one does not track anything. I am going to use Ixquick because I want to use it before it goes away. Mr. Woolner also told us to. I don’t know what the answer is so I am just going to make a guess. I don’t think that it is C because that is REALLY old. I don’t think that the answer is A either. I think that the answer is B, 1,300 years (in 2010). When I am searching for this, I am going to use the key words Nara Japan’s first capital. When I used Ixquick, NOTHING happened when I typed. It did not start guessing as to what I was about to type like Google and Bing did. I scrolled through the first page of snippets and I selected The Daily Muse. This had the answer although I had to do the map. It said that it was in 710. 2010-710= 1300! http://soulofthegarden.com/Japan.html. One this website, the answer is clearly B, 1,300 years and surprisingly, I was right again! J
I am going to use the search engine called AltaVista. I never used this search engine before and I had no idea that it even existed. I am using it because it was a suggestion from Mr. Woolner. I don’t know this question either so I am going to guess that it is C. In my opinion, B seemed a bit bizarre but that is my opinion. It could be A, but I don’t think that it is very likely. I am going to use the key words, northern pacific gyre attraction. When I look at this search engine, I see adds and “What is Popular” with pictures. There are a ton of ads. When I type, nothing comes up that tries to guess what I am going to type. Just like Ixquick. I chose a website that showed the answer right on the link. http://scribol.com/environment/waste-and-recycling/the-north-pacific-gyre-100-million-tons-of-garbage-and-growing. I was wrong because the answer is B, A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle. I thought that is was bizarre and it is but the fact is actually correct! It is amazing.
I am going to do this very very differently. I am going to use four search engines and then compare them. I am going to use Dog Pile, Google, Duck Duck Go and WebCrawler. I don’t know what the answer is but I am going to guess that the answer is A Istanbul, Turkey. It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque. The search terms that I am going to use for all four of the search engines are Hagia Sophia. When I started to type in Duck Duck Go, a ton of guesses came up as to what I was going to type. Results pop up as soon as I start typing. It remembers what I or other people had searched recently. Google and Dog Pile did the same thing but when you type in Web Crawler, nothing pops up until I have hit the enter key to search what I have typed in the search engine. I am going to use Duck Duck Go as my final result engine. I used a website that looked reliable. http://historymedren.about.com/od/byzantineart/ss/hagia-sophia.htm. The final answer is clearly A, Istanbul, Turkey. It’s a museum that previously was Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque. I was right! J
I am going to do an advanced search for this question. I am going to use google because Mr. Woolner is telling me to. I don’t know what the correct answer to this question is. I am going to use the search terms, Kampar River. I then did an advanced search by typing “Kampar River:*.edu” so that I only came up with edu websites. After scrolling through the first page of snippets, I chose a website that looked reliable. http://seasiavisions.library.cornell.edu/?f%5Bauthor_tesim%5D%5B%5D=Skeat%2C+Walter+William&f%5Bimage_format_tesim%5D%5B%5D=drawings&f%5Bimage_geo_tesim%5D%5B%5D=+Malaysia--West+Malaysia--Perak--Changat+Bertam+%7C+Malaysia--West+Malaysia--Perak--Kampar+River&page=5. The answer is B Goepeng, Malaysia.
I am going an advanced search just like what I did with question number 6. I am using the search engine Web Crawler. I am using this search engine because I haven’t used it before and I would like to try it out. I think that the answer to this question is B, Southwest England because it seems to be the one that makes the most sense, but I do not know for sure. I am going to use the keywords Devonshire England location in my search. In my advanced search, I am going to look for .edu websites. When I typed in Devonshire England location site:*.edu in Web Crawler, it didn’t work so Mr. Woolner and I discovered that Web Crawler must not work With that kind of advanced search. So I decided to try Dog Pile instead. When I tried to use Dog Pile, it said that no results were found when I typed in the exact same thing. I guess that it doesn’t work for Dog Pile either. So, I used Yahoo instead and it worked. I couldn’t find the answer so I didn’t use the advanced search, instead, I looked in images to find a website with a map of England so I could see for myself where it was located. I search Map of England in Yahoo images. http://mapsengland.blogspot.com/2013/01/printable-map-of-uk-detailed-pictures.html. The answer was B, Southwest England. I was right again! J
I am going to use the search engine Galaxy. I am using this search engine because I have never used it before and never even heard of it before. I think that the answer is C, American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades. I am just guessing because I have no idea what the real answer is. When I search, I am going to use the advanced search and type in Adirondacks:*.net. I am going to use the search term Adirondacks location. When I start to type in Galaxy, no pop-ups come up to try and guess what I am about to type. The search didn’t work though so I am just going to search it regularly without the advanced search. Galaxy doesn’t work at all so I am going to use the search engine HotBot instead. This search engine tracks things because suggestions popped up while I was typing. I am not going to use the advanced search. I came up with a website that had he answer after looking through the snippets. http://adirondacksonlocation.com/. The answer was B, Mountain range in New York state. I was wrong. L
I am going to use the search engine Cuil because I never use it and never even heard of it. I think that the answer to this question is C, The South Indies but I do not know for sure. I am going to use an advanced search for .org websites only. The search terms that I am going to use are Caribbean Indies. As I began to type in the bar (Caribbean Indies:.org), I came up with suggestions which means that this search engine tracks what you do like Google. As I scrolled through the snippets after I searched it, Wikipedia was the only website that looked like it was the only snippet that had right in the title what I was looking for. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean. The answer was clearly A, The West Indies. I was wrong again L!
I am going to use the search engine entireweb.com because I need to use a different search engine for every question and I haven’t used that one yet. I think that the answer to this question is A, Quito, Ecuador. I don’t really know at all, I just know where each of the countries are located. So I am pretty much just making a guess. I am going to use an advanced search for only .com websites. I am going to use the search terms Galapagos Islands tourists locations. I noticed when I began to type in entireweb.com, no suggestions popped up so that means that this search engine does not track what you or other people search. After looking through the snippets, I chose the first on which was a trip advisor website. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g294310-Galapagos_Islands-Vacations.html. I could clearly see the answer on this website which was A, Quito, Ecuador. I was right! J
I am going to use the search engine AOL Search because just like almost all of the other search engines, I have never used it before and I am just trying it. I think that the answer to this question is B, Yellowstone. I am going to use an advanced search for .gov websites only. I am using the search terms US first national park. This is also a search engine that tracks what you search and do because suggestions popped up as I typed in the bar. After looking through the snippets, I found a website that had the answer right in the snippet title and that is why I chose to use it. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/yehtml/yeabout.html. The answer was B, Yellowstone National Park. I was right again! J
I am going to use the search engine Lycos because I have never used it before.
