On day two at Cardigan, we woke up at 7:00am. When we were ready and dressed for hiking we went downstairs for breakfast. It was not ready yet, so I played cards again until it was.
We had scrambled eggs, bacon, blueberry muffins, oatmeal and orange juice for our breakfast. After we finished eating, we went upstairs to our rooms to get ready for the BIG hike up Mount Cardigan and Firescrew. Once we were dressed my group gathered out on the lawn to meet with Becca. She went over a few rules that we had to follow and then we began our hike! Yay!!
Just barely after we started hiking, we saw a woodpecker while we were doing our first plot study. Then about half way through our hike, we saw a snake. About a half an hour after we saw the snake, we saw a cute, little chipmunk sitting up in a tree. We hiked a bit further then did our 2nd plot study. Then we got LOST! Not too badly though we had lost track of the yellowtags on the trees and had to backtrack till we found the yellow tags again. Thank goodness that the trails were marked so we could find our way back. That human interaction saved the day! That got us back on track for the remainder of our hike. Before we started hiking again we sat down to have the lunch we packed that morning after breakfast. I ate a turkey and cheese sandwich with carrots and celery and a sweet and juicy orange. I also drank plenty of water. With a lot of huffing and puffing we reached the top of Firescrew Mountain. It was worth the climb. The view was terrific. We sat down to rest and to each sketch something that we saw while sitting on top of the mountain. I chose to sketch Mount Cardigan because that was what I was looking at and could see clearly. Then we did our third plot study on top of the mountain. After this, we set out to climb Mount Cardigan.
After a short period of time, we arrived at the top of Mount Cardigan. It was an even more spectacular view than Firescrew! We could see the lodge where we were staying. All of a sudden we heard a helicopter coming. It flew in and landed on Firescrew. Then it lifted off again and began to circle both mountains. That was pretty cool. After we hung out and enjoyed the view for a bit we headed back down the mountain.
We hiked for about an hour and then we stopped to sketch. I sketched a huge root that was sticking up out of the ground on the trail. Then we hiked down a ski trail because one of the other trails was too dangerous. We arrived back at the lodge around 5:00pm that evening. Just before arriving, Preston was stung by a bee through his sock. He was okay but, it hurt. We went inside to clean up and take a shower. After getting in comfortable clothes our group set up the turn to set up the tables for dinner. We had chicken stir-fry, white rice, poppy-seed rolls and salad. After dinner, we played a trivia game to determine the order in which the groups would get their ice-cream sundaes. Our group was 2nd because we were the closest to the correct answer for the number of black bears living in NH. We could choose vanilla ice-cream with hot fudge, whip cream, sprinkles or jimmies. YUM! They were soooooo good!!
Then we went up to get changed to go outside again. We went to the campfire. Each group performed their own skits which they created. Then we were told 2 different stories by our guides. The stories were interesting to listen to and it was fun to imitate the sounds of a rainstorm. Then it was time to go back inside the lodge.
Inside the lodge Mr. Woolner read us a story that was written by his Uncle. I enjoyed listening to that story too. After the story was finished, it was about 10:00pm and time to go to bed. I was tired and ready for bed. It was another great day at Cardigan!
