On day one at Cardigan, we got there at about 10:30am on Sunday. For the first 3 hours, all 40 of us played games and ate our snack and lunch. We played the games with the four tour guides. Their names were Becca (who was my tour guide), Tabby, Robin and Hope. It was a lot of fun! After that, we found out what group we were in for hiking. We got with our groups and did different activities. Our group got together and decided what our group name was going to be. We came up with The Purple Panthers. After that, we played a name game while standing in a circle. That was also fun.

Next, we went for about a 5 minute hike to one of the streams to do a stream study. We did several things in the study. We tested the clearness of the water, we looked at the nature surrounding the stream, we caught creatures that were in the stream, we drew and sketched the stream and its surroundings and many more interesting things for our study. We caught things like water striders, small fish and a few more creatures like that. It was pretty amazing being in this region of New Hampshire. We walked just a short distance into the woods and there was a stream right there. When we were done with that, we headed back to the lodge.

After we got settled and unpacked in our rooms, we all went downstairs to have dinner. While one of the groups was setting up the tables, I played cards with a bunch of other people. We played Go Fish and a few other card games. When they were finished setting up, we all sat down at the tables.

The dinner was really good! We had spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread and salad. We also had sweetened ice tea to drink. I sat with Maegan, Jaclyn, Shelby and Hope (one of the tour guides). For dessert we had a delicious vanilla and chocolate marble cake with a dusting of powdered sugar on top. Yum!!!!

After dinner, my group had to clean up. We took about 5 minutes with that and then When we we went upstairs to get ready to go outside again. It took me about 10 minutes to get ready. Then I went downstairs and outside to the lawn where our group was meeting. The first thing we did was play a game called bat and moth. I was the first bat to play and I was blindfolded. It was a ton of fun! I could hear everyone else laughing as I tried to follow the moth when it made a sound. I kept running into trees (which were really people). We played 4 rounds of that game and then we were all blindfolded and stood in a single file line. We all held a rope and my tour guide (Becca) guided us through the woods for a little bit. When we stopped, we all took off our blindfolds and talked about night vision. Becca gave us each a marker and we had to guess what color it was and write that color on our hand. I guessed that my color was yellow and I was right. Then Becca gave us each a mint. If you crunch the mint in our teeth, your partner would be able to see sparks in your mouth. It was really cool!

We headed back to the lodge and the eclipse was just starting to happen. So we went upstairs to get in our pajamas because Mr. Woolner was going to read a story to us about Blackbeard the famous pirate. It was an interesting story about him and the way he died. After that, we all went outside to watch the eclipse. It was really worth seeing! Around the outside of the moon, it was reddish because of the sun. Then around 10:00pm we went to bed. I had an awesome first day at Mount Cardigan!
