Concord Monitor Quiz

A project about “Searching” For the correct information.

First Name: Brooklyn

Date: March 17th 2016

 Color Group: Blue

This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

a.       Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico

b.      Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola

c.       Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

In order to answer this question, I will be using DuckDuckGo.com to search the key terms: Bermuda Triangle, Location, Points. I have no real reason for using DuckDuckGo.com other than that I would like to use a new browser. I hypothesize that the answer will be A. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. Having entered the search terms one can see snippets similar to the following below appear. Upon further inspection and binge reading one can see that answer C. Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico was the correct answer.

Where is the location of the Bermuda Triangle - Answers.com

The Bermuda Triangle covers just over 932,000 square miles of open seas in the Atlantic Ocean and has its three points

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

a.       Italy

b.      Spain

c.       Brazil

I plan to use the Google search engine for this question because I fell that this search engine is very popular and reliable. I have heard of a wood called Pernambuco and I believe it is indigenous to tropical places and climates so I will choose C, Brazil. The search term I used was “Pernambuco” and to the right I saw a map of Pernambuco and some information on it and beneath the map it said: “Brazilian State”. Snippets below the search bar included: Wikipedia, WikiTravel Travel guide, and Travel Channel, I decided on Wikipedia: Pernambuco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, showing that C. Brazil was the correct answer.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

a.       570 years  (in 2010)

b.      1,300 years   (in 2010)

c.       4,000 years   (in 2010)

For this Question I choose to use Bing, it is the second most popular search engine to gather information. I guess B. 1,300 Years (in 2010 ), For japan is a much older place than America ( 200+ yrs ). I will use Nara, Japan, Anniversary 2010, Capital, for my search terms. When I scrolled through the snippets, I saw one date in particular that is in almost all search results, 1,300. Happy 1,300th to Nara, Japan - The New York Times, Showing that B. 1300 (in 2010) was right.

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

a.       A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales

b.      A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle

c.       An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

I am going to use the search engine commonly known as DuckDuckgo.com because it is an engine I’ve never used before and would like to experiment with it. I will make an educated guess and eliminate A. from the list because it seems highly improbable that many whales can survive there and therefore I choose B. I will use North Pacific Gyre as my search term.  It can be observed in the titles of the snippets below that B. was the correct answer because they all hold one word in common: Garbage. 1. This year (in 2010) a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

a.       Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.

b.      Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.

c.       Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

We are going to compare four different search engines: Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Dogpile. I am using these different search engines to see the varying results. The same search terms will be used for them all, 2010 angel mosaic Hagia Sophia, my answer would be A, Istanbul Turkey. Upon entering these search terms into the websites the snippets generally consist of vacation locations and the Hagia Sophia, and angel in Istanbul. http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01725/mysteries-2509_1725247c.jpg

For this question we will be using the services of Google.com, and will be doing Advanced searching by typing: Kampar River Site:*.edu. In doing so we find that majority of the snippets look like the one below. By looking through the Results we see that Letter B was Correct and the Kampar River is in fact located in Gopeng Malaysia. Here is an excerpt and link.

  1. What and where are the Adirondacks?

a.       The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs

b.      Mountain range in New York state

c.       American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

In order to answer this question I will be using DogPile.com and the search term: Adirondacks. I have no Particular reason for using this website.  I hypothesize that the answer will be a. The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs. When the search term is entered into the dogpile search bar, web links with information about chairs or vacation rentals immediately pop up, so I checked out Wikipedia for an excerpt and some information:

The Adirondack Mountains /ædᵻˈrɒndæk/ form a massif in the northeast of Upstate New York in the United States. Its boundaries correspond to the boundaries of Adirondack Park. The mountains form a roughly circular dome, about 160 miles (260 km) in diameter and about 1 mile (1,600 m) high. The current relief owes much to glaciation.”

This excerpt plainly shows that the Adirondacks are located to the northeast of upstate New York making the answer, B.

To answer the following question I plan to use Dogpile.com and the search terms: Americas oldest National Park. I infer that the answer will be C. Yosemite. Upon entering the search terms into the dogpile search bar, one can see that snippets most commonly consist of travel locations and vacation rentals but scrolling further down one begins to see web links such as this one showing that the answer B.
