This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use the search engine… google. I am going to use google because I have always have so I am just going to use that one for my first try. I think that the answer is A because the Bahamas are in the ocean and so is the Bermuda Triangle. I noticed that the answer popped up instead of websites at first. After scrolling through the first page I went on a website called “Today I Found Out” They gave me the right answer… c) Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico this is their link…

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?
    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I am going to use a different search engine I am going to try Ask.com. I am going to try this one because I have used it when doing a science project. So I know how to use it… sort of. I honestly think it could be any of them because it sounds like Spanish but Brazil has lots of different plants. As I typed it did the same as google with different choices, turns out it is from Brazil. I guess that wasn’t that hard because every site said Brazil in the title. So the answer is c) Brazil. I got this answer from Encyclopedia Britannica.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I am going to use a different search engine this time, ixquick it doesn’t track anything. I am using this because Mr. Woolner isn’t giving me a choice and I don’t feel like arguing right now. I think the answer is b) 1300. I noticed that this is the first site that didn’t guess what I wanted to say so I typed the entire thing before it searched. I went on a site called Traveler. It said that the correct answer is b) 1300

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. debris field of garbage trapped in a A giant spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

I am going to use Bing because I used to use this engine before I used Google. I think the answer is c) an underground sea mountain, I think that it is unlikely to be the whales because it seems a bit unrealistic. It also seems that if all that garbage was there that people would clean it up, so I am pretty sure the answer is C. I noticed that like many other engines it guessed what I wanted. So when it searched I went to a site called Environmental Cleanup Coalition, it said that the answer was b) a giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle which is a shame because garbage shouldn’t pile up like that.

This year (in 2010) a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia. Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

I am going to do this one differently. I am going to use 4 different search engines, Google, Bing, ixquick, and DuckDuckGo. I think the answer is a) Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque. Ixquick waited for me to be done typing and then it searched. Bing knew what I wanted before I could type Hagia. Google was no different I didn’t even get to the g and up popped Hagia Sophia. DuckDuckGo did the exact same thing as Bing. I went under a site called, Hagia Sophia Museum. It said the answer is a) Istanbul, Turkey. It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.

  1. If you want to go whitewater rafting on the Kampar River, where do you have to go?

    1. Wheeling, West Virginia.
    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

For this question I am going to do an advanced search on google. I think the answer is c) Johannesburg, South Africa. because Africa has lots of large rivers and the Kampar River sound like it is large. I noticed that there were less options on the advanced search then there were on the regular one but it still guessed what I wanted. Turns out the answer is b) Gopeng, Malaysia. I found this out on a site called Southeast Asia Visions.

  1. Most tourists love Devonshire cream tea – scones, clotted cream and raspberry jam with tea.  But where in England is Devonshire?

    1. In dairy country east of London
    2. Southwest England
    3. Near the Scottish border

I am going to use a search engine called Dogpile. I am using Dogpile because I love dogs and dog is in the name. I think that the answer is b) Southwest England. I think this because a dairy country sound cool but is highly unlikely. It could be C but I am guessing it is B. I noticed that Dogpile guessed what I wanted, it took 3 pages of result to find a good site called History of Devon. It gave me lots of facts about Devonshire and where in England it was. It told me that the correct answer is b) Southwest England.

    1. The Amish region in Indiana where craftsmen make chairs
    2. Mountain range in New York state
    3. American Indian reservations in the Florida Everglades

I am going to use an advanced search on Ask.com. I have no idea how I am going to do that butt I am hoping I will figure out. Before I search it I am going to make a guess about what and where the Adirondacks. I think the answer is   b) Mountain range in New York State. I think this is the answer because I live in New Hampshire and I have heard of the Adirondacks. I went on a site called ESF and they told me about the coyotes that live in the Adirondacks in New York. So the answer is b) Mountain range in New York State

    1. The West Indies
    2. The East Indies
    3. The South Indies

I am going to use a search engine called Yahoo for this question, I am going to use this search engine because my friend next to me is using and well why not. I think that the correct answer is a) The West Indies. I think that is the answer because we are learning about the Caribbean and they are called the West Indies. When searching it tried to guess what I wanted to search but it was wrong. Once I searched it a couple adds popped up, I went to a site called Caribbean and they told me the answer is a. The West Indies.
