Day One: The Dawn of the Great Trip

This is a drawing done by me, that illustrates the leaf of a Hobblebush (Viburnum lantanoides). This is a sketch I drew of a Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) leaf. This leaf can be identified as a Sugar Maple, as opposed to another type of Maple partly because of the u-shape indent in the leaf, indicated in my sketch. This a rough sketch of mine that shows Cardigan Lodge.

On day one of the Cardigan trip, heavy rain was predicted and the weatherman was right. Water poured from the sky in buckets as approximately half of the seventh grade (myself included) pulled out of Hopkinton Middle/High School in a school bus at about 8:30 am on September 30th. We sat on the bus in our soggy rain gear (our clothing choices that day were an example of human environmnment interaction) for a little over an hour. The bus smelled of mildew and sweat due partially to the weather outside, and partially to the bad hygiene of some. Still, we had a great time joking, laughing, and being very loud, before arriving at Cardigan Lodge. We shielded our faces and gear from the rain as we slowly loaded everything from the bus, and into the lodge. After taking off our muddy boots in the entry hall, we stampeded up the stairs, and into our assigned dormitories to drop off our bags. We then proceeded to the kitchen where we played some games, and learned a little about the the lodge and its staff. Later, after some shifting of itineraries because of the rain (yet another example of human environment interaction), we met with our newly assigned hiking groups, and set off to the woods for a short hike. We spent most of that short trip exploring a stream, and examining other various organisms in the forest. We then walked back to the Lodge, where we had free time for about an hour. After that, we had a delicious dinner in the dining hall. Afterwards we went back to our rooms and changed into warm clothes, as we were about to go outside for another nature walk with our hiking groups (this time in the dark). Outside, we learned all sorts of cool things about nocturnal animals and night vision, and gazed at the wonderful night sky for a bit. Following that, we went back inside for some stories by the fire, and witnessed Mr. Woolner's epic fall through a table. Finally, we went back to our rooms, brushed our teeth, and went to bed.
