Red or D2 B3

This is a quiz that was found in the Sunday January 3 2010 Concord Monitor newspaper…. Answers are there, too.  You need to read the question, and… if you KNOW the correct answer, that’s good… but you must still VERIFY that correct answer.  And write out your source for that correct answer.  And, MOST importantly, I want to you also write out your thinking process- especially for the questions you do NOT know the answer to.  Can you eliminate any of the answers?  How?   And how did you search for the correct answer?  Did you search the QUESTION, or did you search the possible answers?

Write it out!  Be complete.  A good paragraph per answer is what we are after here…

1.      What are the three places that make up the points of the Bermuda Triangle?

    1. Bahamas, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
    2. Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Tortola
    3. Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico

I am going to use Bing. I am going to use Bing because I have never tried it before. I don’t know what it is. But if I had to guess I would B but I have no idea. The answer is C Miami, Bermuda, Puerto Rico. When I got to the browser http://geography.about.com/od/culturalgeography/a/bermudatriangle.htm

  1. Recife is the popular, pretty capital of Pernambuco state in what country?

    1. Italy
    2. Spain
    3. Brazil

I am going to use a different search engine this time. I will try dogpile.com because I have never used it before. I am going to guess C. Because Pernambuco sounds like a Brazil name.  The answer is C Brazil. This is the link where I found my answer www http://.brazil.org.za/pernambuco.html.

  1. Historic Nara, Japan, celebrates a huge anniversary in 2010.  How old is the country’s first capital city?

    1. 570 years  (in 2010)
    2. 1,300 years   (in 2010)
    3. 4,000 years   (in 2010)

I am going to use a different search engine this time. I am going to use ixquick because Mr. Woolner told us to. I think the answer is B because the number is reasonable. I noticed that when I started typing nothing came up. The right answer is B 1,300 years. When I got to the page I opened this website https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nara,_Nara this website gave me my answer.

  1. The Northern Pacific Gyre lies in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the west coast of the United States. What does it contain?

    1. A huge pod of an estimated 2,000 endangered gray whales
    2. A giant debris field of garbage trapped in a spinning circle
    3. An underground sea mountain 7 miles tall

And for the fourth question we will use yet another search engine. For this one I am going to use duckduckgo. I am going to use this search engine because it has a very cute opening page. I think the answer is A because there is a lot of water over there and I think that there could be a pod with 2,000 endangered gray whales. The answer is B. I found the answer on http://scribol.com/environment/waste-and-recycling/the-north-pacific-gyre-100-million-tons-of-garbage-and-growing.

  1. This year (in 2010)  a mosaic of an angel was discovered under the floor of the Hagia Sophia.  Where and what is the Hagia Sophia?

    1. Istanbul, Turkey.  It’s a museum that previously was a Byzantine Christian Church and a mosque.
    2. Luxembourg.  It’s a cathedral built to honor St. Sophia, the country’s patron saint.
    3. Mexico City.  It’s a traditional market where the image of the angel is said to have healing powers.

We are going to use four different search engines. The four that I am going to do are google, bing, or dogpile, and duckduckgo. I have no idea what the answer is. When I was using google when I typed Hagia it came up with her last name Sophia. When I type her first name it shows her last name right away. The right answer is A. This is the link to the website I found the answer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia.

    2. Gopeng, Malaysia
    3. Johannesburg, South Africa

We are going to use an advanced search on google. I have no idea what the answer is. After looking at the sites I now know the right answer and it is B. This is the site I found my answer on http://www.academia.edu/6996844/White_Water_Rafting_and_Kayaking_in_Malaysia_A_Guide_For_River_Difficulty

For this question I am going to use a site that I just found and it is infospace.com. I think the answer is B. I noticed that when I started to type Devonshire nothing showed up. When I searched I got a lot of adds but I finally found a site with an answer. The answer is B. I was correct. This is the link that I used http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Devon

For this question I am going to use Ask.com for this one. I am going to use Ask.com because I have never used it before. I think the answer is C. For my search thing I am going to type Adirondacks company and where it is located. I noticed that when I stared to type Adir it came up with so many results of like the company’s chairs and all that kind of stuff. But when I finally got there I found a site with the correct answer. So the correct answer is B Mountain range in New York state. This is the link for the website with the correct answer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adirondack_Iron_and_Steel_Company.
