Red group Day 2 Block 3

Location and Place

On our 7th grade overnight environmental camping trip, we went to Cardigan Mountain. The relative location of Cardigan Mountain is between the Firescrew peak and Orange mountain. Cardigan Mountain is located in western New Hampshire. It is located to the East of the town of Orange, to the Northwest of Alexandria and Southwest of Groton and Hebron. The absolute location of Cardigan Mountain is Latitude-43.65 degrees north and Longitude-71.91 degrees west. The elevation at the summit is 3156 feet above sea level. The physical geography of Cardigan Mountain consists of several different types of forest.

At the base, near the lodge, the trees are Hemlock and Birch. As you reach the halfway point on the hike to the summit, you will notice that trees thin out and there are more shrubs than at the bottom. At the peak, there are a few shrubs, but the area is mostly made of rock. At our stream study, we observed fish, and moss; we also tested the water to see if there was enough oxygen to support aquatic life. On our night hike, we stopped to listen for any animal sounds like owls or bat sounds.

The cultural geography of Cardigan Mountain matches the culture of western New Hampshire. In this area, the most common language is English and the people eat American food. The population of the nearby towns is small. The roads leading up to the Lodge are made of gravel. The trails around the mountain are worn and well traveled. We saw a small general store selling local pumpkins and apples. The AMC built bridges so we can cross the little creeks on the hiking trails. I really enjoyed my guide Hope, she made learning fun and interesting. I love hiking and the summit was beautiful with all the different colored leaves.

Our group was at Cardigan for 3 days from sept.27th sept 28th sept.29th
